Professional and Personal Benefits of Learning HTML

Although the job outlook is looking better, both employers and job seekers know how competitive it can be. Everyone wants to have that edge above the rest, whether it is more relevant experience or a good recommendation. Competence of skills such as SEO and social media managing are in high demand.
But what about having knowledge in HTML – the foundation of all web design and web programming?
An article featured on PR at Sunrise lists the practical uses of HTML in communications, some of which include drafting and editing an e-newsletter and embedding multimedia into almost any written content. Some personal benefits of knowing web programming languages, besides putting it in your resume, is the ability to create your own online portfolio from scratch (no WordPress needed) and giving you the foundation to learn more programming languages, like FBML (Facebook’s own version of HTML), and more complex programming languages, like JavaScript (a common language used in web browsers).
So now that you know the applications and benefits of HTML, how to do learn it? If you have the time in your schedule and room in your budget, see if your college or university has an intro to web design/programming for non-majors. A free way to learn on your own time is from online resources and tutorials (some of which are linked below).
You may be thinking that learning a programming language is frightening, however, a working knowledge of a few basics is really all you need:
  • Inserting a link
  • Inserting an image
  • Formatting text
  • Spacing text and images on a web page
Now that you know the how and why to learn HTML, go practice some coding!
